President Trump speaks at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan

President Trump has called Norway a “shithouse country” and said that Norwegian immigrants were not welcome in the US.

The comments at a political rally in Port Huron, Michigan, a week before the midterm elections, were Trump’s latest in a protracted tantrum over not being awarded a Nobel peace prize by the committee.

Using a term he has previously applied to Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen, Trump said: “Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country, actually.”

The US leader said he would welcome immigrants from some countries but not from Norway “because I didn’t get the Nobel prize … So I don’t want anybody from Norway.”

There was no indication that the Trump administration was adopting an official policy on Norwegian immigrants.

The Nobel committee is based in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, and its five members who award the peace prize are appointed by the Norwegian parliament. However, the committee is a private body and the prize is classed as private.

The Norwegian foreign minister, Espen Barth Eide, told the national broadcaster NRK on Monday: “He [Trump] knows very well that the Nobel committee is independent. We have reminded them of that, if anyone is wondering, and that is still the case.”

Earlier this month Trump called the failure to give him a Nobel peace prize an “indelible stain” on Norway.

He mocked this year’s winner, the South African human rights lawyer Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, describing her as a “mystery person” during a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York. “I never heard of the person. Nobody did,” he said.

“This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision,” he said. “The Nobel peace prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilisation. And we will not forget, Norway.”

During his speech in Michigan on Sunday, Trump also referred to the recent unrest in France, attributing protests over the cost of living to immigration. The French government has accused “ultra-left” groups of using violence to escalate protests.

“What they’re having in Europe, and it’s not only France now — it’s Italy and so many different countries over there — is really a mess,” Trump said. “And it’s all because they allowed people that hate them into their countries. They don’t like their buildings, they don’t like their art, they don’t like their people, they don’t like their laws, and that’s what you’re seeing on the streets right now.”

At the rally, Trump was joined on stage by the US rapper Nicki Minaj.

“President Trump, it is an honour to stand with you every single time, and I will continue to support you for ever,” Minaj, 43, told the rally.

Trump, 80, later complimented Minaj’s backside then asked her to stand up.

“By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful ass before — Nicki Minaj,” said Trump. “That’s hard to miss. Stand up! That’s hard to miss.”

In Michigan, the Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who would become the first Muslim US senator, is facing a tight race with the Republican Mike Rogers.

Michigan Senate race polls: who will win the 2026 election?

El-Sayed is supported by Barack Obama, the former US president, and the left-wing senator Bernie Sanders.
